1.1 Introducing my placement

On the 4th of June 2022 I travelled to Thailand, Bangkok to start my three-month long placement abroad. The placement was the role of an intern, for the event’s organisation and photography private sector business called Niramit Creations.

Thirty years of collective wisdom has enabled Niramit to straddle across and succeed in the sphere of event planning, production, management, photography, and videography. (Niramit Creations, 2020: page. 1) The for-profit company was founded in 2020 by a team of three specialists whose main objective is to organise and plan events on behalf of clients. Events such as product launches, gala ceremonies and weddings are all proceedings that Niramit Creations are involved in arranging. Niramit’s work involves many strategies and skills, and highly values style and excellent materialistic and online quality.

My internship was carried out from the 4th of June 2022 to the 27th of August 2022. My placement travel was planned to be after my second year of university, in the summer break between the second and third academic years. I resided in a student apartment complex, PP Plus mansion, located in Sukhumvit on the outskirts of Bangkok. Organization for the accommodation came with the intern abroad package (see part 1.3) I had arranged with the student abroad company, The Intern Group. (The Intern Group, 2023) The daily routine for the placement was traveling to the Niramit office, for a working day from nine to five, around twenty minutes motorbike journey from my residence. The days spent at the office involved editing and communicating with clients and staff, furthermore, traveling to possible venues and locations for future collaboration. However, during the time the company was working on an event, meeting the Niramit team at designated locations ready to assist the occasion was part of my work assignment. (see part 2.5)

My time at Niramit was challenging at times, having to balance a new culture of work and innovative responsibilities that pushed me out of my comfort zone. I am ADHD neurodivergent, therefore am disabled under the 2010 equalities act, (Government Equalities Office, 2010: Equality Act 2010) thus working under pressure and managing normal tasks proves to be difficult at times. In addition, the stress levels were sometimes hard to manage, however, the beautiful scenery and atmospheric calmness of the Thai people balanced out my behaviours. Although performing in a demanding and lively work environment did create pressure, when assisting on events, (see part 3, Critical review) I have proven to myself that sticking to my routines and persevering can help me achieve anything.

1.2 What is Niramit?

The company offers a package that entails everything the client requires for their event. Personal and family-based occasions, as well as corporate and sports events are among the clientele that Niramit provides for. The company first focus on the arrangements regarding the location and venue, which can be from the client’s request, or provide possible options for them to choose from.

They have held events all over Thailand, from areas in the wealthy parts of South Phuket and exclusive sites in the centre of Bangkok. Being their intern allowed me to experience this incredible aspect of the job. (see part 2.5) Décor and designs such as colour schemes and lighting are a large part of the company’s package, with one of the co-founders Palkin taking lead on these decisions. Catering and hiring professional chefs come under the refreshment and food management, preparing impressive buffets for the enjoyment of guests. (see part 2.4)

Each event Niramit work with, cover different areas of global industries, and meeting the needs of the client originates from extensive communication and research. Niramit are supported by an international team of creative minds and experienced event producers that ensure your events have an impeccably high standard. (Niramit Creations, 2020: page. 1) Anoop Krishnan, another of the co-founders, specialises in the creating of digital and photography input, having experience of over ten years. Niramit offer a cinematic collection of videography and photography for the client, which shows the journey of their event through a montage of content.

1.3 The process of obtaining the placement

The process of obtaining my placement took over a year to finalise and it officially started on the 17th of February 2021. I had planned to study abroad when applying for university, back in 2020, and when granted a place at The University of Roehampton (The University of Roehampton, 1841) I planned for what date traveling for a placement would be possible.

The modules for the BA/BSc Photography course, that I chose to study, included this work placement section which would take part in my third year. This meant that my traveling would have to occur in the summer after my second year of studies. That year I worked part time at HUX American Brasserie (HUX American Brasserie, 2020) to save efficient funds for the travel and cost of living. Therefore, the official start of the application to work abroad was by applying to the Roehampton Study Abroad scheme, (Roehampton Study Abroad, 2023) which was completed that February. Various forms and documents had to be completed for each company that I used to find the placement, which I will include in this introduction. On the 18th of August 2021, Roehampton Study Abroad paired me with the company ISEP Study Abroad. (ISEP Study Abroad, 2014) The organisation is an abroad scheme, that particularly works alongside universities, which assists students to organise a course or placement, either to work or study. ISEP Direct programs offer guaranteed placement for eligible applicants in popular destinations around the world. (ISEP Study Abroad, 2023)

ISEP was the company to help determine where in the world I wanted to travel to, and on the 2nd of February 2022 they confirmed that a corporation named The Intern Group (The Intern Group, 2011) would be taking over in the final stages of the organisation. The Intern Group are a more specific provider of internship programs, which granted my desired location in Thailand, Bangkok. The leading provider of customized global internship programs. (The Intern Group, 2023) Over the next month’s numerous zoom calls and sending of details were exchanged with their Bangkok team, as well as the organisation of my Visa and the COVID 19 checks and authorisation needed to be processed for access to the country. This duration of time also included signed letters from my professor, proving that I was traveling for a university work placement, my own personal cover letters, and CV. After the long procedure, finally on the 1st of May 2022 I was confirmed to be working at Niramit Creations.
